Failure to use lubricating oil according to seasons.
Different grades of lubricating oil shall be used in different seasons. Some diesel engines suffer from bearing seizure simply because low-viscosity lubricating oil is used in summer, which fails to form an oil film on the contact surface of crankshaft bearings.
Unclean lubricating oil.
If unclean lubricating oil is filled into the engine, it will block the oil passages and consequently cause bearing seizure.
Improper amount of engine oil added.
Excessive engine oil will lead to oil burning and carbon deposition during engine operation; insufficient engine oil will result in poor lubrication and further cause bearing seizure and shaft locking. Generally, the oil level should be kept between the upper and lower scale marks of the oil dipstick.
Neglect of instrument observation.
Under normal operating conditions, the engine oil pressure of a diesel engine should be between 0.15~0.25 MPa, and the idling oil pressure shall not be lower than 0.05 MPa. Many operators rarely check the oil pressure gauge and thus fail to detect potential faults in a timely manner.
Non-standard fitting clearance between shaft and bearing.
If the clearance is too small, engine oil cannot easily enter and form an oil film layer; if the clearance is too large, engine oil is prone to leakage, making it difficult to maintain the oil film. Therefore, the bearing clearance must be kept within the standard range during repair and assembly.
Long-term overload operation leading to bearing seizure.
Long-term overload operation causes high engine temperature and low rotating speed, increases the load capacity of crankshaft bearings, and reduces the oil supply of the oil pump accordingly. In addition, the viscosity of lubricating oil decreases at high temperatures, which makes bearing seizure more likely to occur.
