A diesel generator set is a type of AC power supply equipment for self-contained power stations. It is a small independent power generation unit that generates electricity by using an internal combustion engine as prime mover to drive a synchronous alternator.
A modern diesel generator set forms a rigid integrated assembly consisting of a diesel engine, three-phase brushless synchronous alternator, control box/panel, cooling radiator, coupling, fuel tank, muffler and common base frame. The flywheel housing of the diesel engine and the front end cover of the alternator are directly axially positioned via shoulders to form a unified unit. A cylindrical elastic coupling is adopted for the flywheel to directly drive the alternator rotor. The two components are fastened together with bolts into a rigid body, ensuring the concentricity between the diesel engine crankshaft and alternator rotor stays within specified tolerances.
A diesel generator set is an integrated assembly of an internal combustion engine and a synchronous alternator. The rated power of the internal combustion engine, restricted by mechanical and thermal loads of its components, is defined as its rated power. The rated power of the synchronous alternator refers to its continuous long-term output power under rated rotational speed. The ratio between the diesel engine’s rated output power and the synchronous alternator’s rated output power is known as the matching ratio.
Diesel Generator Set
1. General Introduction
A diesel generator set is a small power generation machinery fueled by diesel oil. It takes a diesel engine as the prime mover to drive an alternator for power generation. A standard set is composed of a diesel engine, alternator, control box, fuel tank, starting & control storage battery, protection devices and emergency cabinet. The complete unit can be fixed on a foundation for stationary operation, or mounted on a trailer for mobile application.
Diesel generator sets are not designed for non-stop continuous operation. If operated continuously for more than 12 hours, its output power will drop to approximately 90% of the rated power.
Although diesel generator sets feature relatively low power ratings, their compact size, flexibility, light weight, complete auxiliary fittings and easy operation & maintenance make them widely used in mines, railways, field construction sites, road maintenance projects, factories, enterprises, hospitals and other facilities as standby or temporary power sources. Newly developed fully automatic unattended emergency power stations in recent years have further expanded the application scope of such generator sets.

2. Classification & Specifications
Diesel generator sets are classified by alternator output power, covering a wide range of specifications from 10kW to 750kW. Each specification is available in three structural variants: protected type (equipped with overspeed, high water temperature and low oil pressure protection devices), emergency type and mobile power station type. Mobile power stations are further divided into high-speed off-road models (matching vehicle driving speed) and low-speed standard mobile models.
3. Ordering Precautions
Export inspection of diesel generator sets is carried out in accordance with technical and economic indicators stipulated in sales contracts or technical agreements. Customers shall pay attention to the following points during selection and contract signing:
(1) If actual operating environmental conditions differ from the calibrated environmental parameters of the generator set, specify ambient temperature, humidity and altitude in the contract to obtain a properly matched unit and auxiliary accessories.
(2) Clarify the cooling method to be adopted during operation, especially critical for large-capacity units.
(3) Besides the unit model, specify the exact engine variant required when placing orders.
(4) The voltage regulation rates of diesel generator sets are available at 1%, 2% and 2.5% of rated voltage; the required rate shall be stated clearly.
(5) Standard supply includes a certain quantity of wearing parts. Extra spare parts demands should be notified in advance.
4. Inspection Items & Methods
A diesel generator set is a complete packaged product comprising a diesel engine, alternator, control components and protection devices. Full-machine inspection for export products covers the following items:
(1) Review of product technical documents and inspection records;
(2) Verification of product specifications, model numbers and key structural dimensions;
(3) Overall exterior quality of the complete unit;
(4) Unit performance: core technical parameters, operational adaptability, reliability and sensitivity of all automatic protection devices;
(5) Other inspection items specified in the sales contract or technical agreement.
