Whether a diesel engine has a deceleration and fuel cut-off function refers to whether the engine control system stops fuel supply when the engine is in a passive state (the chassis drives the engine to run at high speed) when the engine is held in gear to reduce the vehicle speed and reaches a certain speed during high-speed operation, thereby achieving the function of fuel saving.
Ordinary mechanical diesel engines do not have the function of high-speed fuel cut-off (only the function of shutting off the engine), while electronic fuel injection diesel engines do have this function. However, this function is designed to prevent the engine from overspeeding and stopping fuel supply in an emergency when the engine speed is uncontrollable at high speed, thereby protecting the engine from greater damage. It is by no means designed to save fuel.
2. Cause: When going downhill and shifting into a low gear, the engine speed is very high. If the engine exhaust valve is not fully engaged, the piston will move upward and hit the top of the piston (professionally known as piston top strike), which can cause serious damage to the piston and valve assembly. In some cases, it may cause the engine connecting rod to bend and deform, and in severe cases, the cylinder block may be damaged, which is detrimental to the engine and shortens its service life.
