Diesel engines, especially their fuel injection pump governors, must be installed, maintained and adjusted in strict accordance with technical requirements at all times. The fuel added shall be clean and of the correct grade. Once a runaway fault occurs, the operator must keep a clear head. Immediately close the throttle and fuel tank switch, loosen the connecting nuts of the high-pressure fuel pipes, tightly block the air inlet of the air filter, and shut down the engine by decompression.
The specific measure to be adopted, which should be simple, feasible and effective, shall be determined according to the structural characteristics of the diesel engine. Operators shall be familiar with the measures in advance. Two typical methods to stop diesel engine runaway are introduced as follows:
(1) When runaway occurs on 105-series diesel engines, cut off the oil supply circuit to force a safe shutdown. Operation steps: Quickly turn the manual crank of the high-pressure injection pump counterclockwise by about 180 degrees to lift the tappet of the high-pressure injection pump. This cuts off the power transmitted from the camshaft of the valve train, stops the fuel supply of the high-pressure injection pump, and enables the diesel engine to shut down quickly and safely. Cutting off the air intake is not effective for this model, because its air filter is not on the instrument panel side, and the air inlets are distributed all over the shell wall of the air filter, making it difficult to block completely.
(2) For Model 485 diesel engine runaway, the following measures can be taken: activate the engine decompression device, block the intake pipeline, turn the stop rocker arm on the distributor pump, close the fuel pipeline switch, or pull off the fuel inlet pipe to cut off the fuel supply.
It is particularly emphasized that reducing or removing the engine load is strictly prohibited once diesel engine runaway happens, to avoid a sharp rise in rotational speed. After a safe shutdown, analyze the cause of the runaway and troubleshoot in a timely manner to prevent recurrence.
If runaway occurs while the vehicle is running, step on the brake to stall the engine; depressing the clutch pedal is strictly forbidden.
