Inspection Items and Routine Periodic Tests of Diesel Generators

(1) Periodic Inspection Items for Diesel Generator under Automatic Mode

Inspect the diesel generator set for any leakage.

Check that the lube oil level is normal.

Check the cooling water level.

Check the oil levels of the storage fuel tank and daily service fuel tank.

Verify that the local mode selector switch is at the AUTOMATIC position; the working power switch of the essential bus section is closed with indicator light illuminated; the emergency stop button is in correct position; no alarm indications exist on the control panel.

Check that the battery charging indicator light is on and the voltage is normal.

(2) Tests for Diesel Generator

Local start-up test of the diesel generator set shall be carried out on day shift of odd Sundays.

Remote start-up test of the diesel generator set shall be carried out on morning shift of even Sundays.

Perform diesel engine start and on-load test prior to unit startup.

(3) Protections and Signals of Diesel Generator Set

1. Diesel Engine Protections

Protections triggering unit shutdown:

High cooling water temperature (above 95℃); Low lube oil pressure (below 0.5 MPa); Reverse power shutdown; Overspeed.

Protections triggering alarm signals:

High cooling water temperature; Low lube oil pressure; High lube oil temperature; Low fuel level; Earth fault.

(4) Generator and Feeder Protections

Overcurrent protection: protection against internal short-circuit of the generator.

Overload protection and earth fault detection device shall activate alarm signals.

An automatic voltage regulator (AVR) fault protection shall be equipped for the generator excitation system.

Rectifier diode fault protection shall be fitted for the brushless excitation device.

Short-circuit protection and overload protection for feeders are implemented via the built-in semiconductor trip units of the outgoing circuit breakers.

Main feeders and branch feeders shall be provided with phase-to-phase short-circuit protection and overload protection. The whole power feeding system shall be equipped with single-phase earth fault detection device.

Phase-to-phase short-circuit protection shall trip the circuit breaker; overload protection and earth fault detection device shall trigger alarm signals.

Short-circuit protection and overload protection of feeders are realized by the built-in semiconductor trip units inside circuit breakers.

(5) Signals

The signal system can be displayed separately on the local control cabinet of the unit and computers in the central control room:

Unit running signal

Unit start failure signal

Unit overspeed signal

Low lube oil pressure / critically low lube oil pressure signal

High cooling water temperature / excessively high cooling water temperature signal

Low fuel tank level signal

24V DC power supply loss signal

110V DC power supply fault signal

Rotating rectifier diode fault signal

Automatic voltage regulator (AVR) fault signal

*General unit fault signal

*Abnormal unit operation signal

*Operation mode selector switch position signal

Fuse blown signal for automatic switching circuit of essential bus power supply

Note: Signals marked with “*” are wired not only locally but also to the unit control room of the main unit (output via passive contacts).
