Precautions for Design and Installation of Diesel Generator Rooms

Precautions for Design and Installation of Diesel Generator Rooms

I. Foundation

1. Support the entire weight of the generator set

2. Maintain the installation positions of the engine, generator and auxiliary equipment

3. Isolate the vibration of the generator set from the surrounding structure

4. The strength must be able to support the wet weight of the unit plus the operating load

5. The edges of the base should extend 150 – 300 mm beyond the base of the generator set

6. The height of the concrete foundation is generally 450 – 600 mm, with an additional 100 – 150 mm above the ground

II. Installation in the machine room

1. Ensure smooth air intake and exhaust in the machine room, and guide the hot air discharged by the radiator out of the machine room and prevent it from flowing back;

2. Ensure that the noise and smoke generated by the unit during operation do not cause excessive pollution to the surrounding environment;

3. There should be sufficient space around the diesel generator set to facilitate cooling, operation and maintenance of the unit. At least 1 – 1.5 meters around, and no other objects within 1.5 – 2 meters above;

4. Ensure that the unit is protected from rain, wind, overheating and freezing damage;

5. Prohibit the storage of flammable and explosive substances around the unit.

III. Noise control

1. Sources of noise

The sources of noise can be divided into two categories:

(1) Caused by structural vibration, which can be reduced by using appropriate anti-vibration devices to transfer the vibration of the generator set to the building structure;

(2) Caused by air vibration, which can be divided into exhaust noise and mechanical noise.

2. Control of noise

(1) Control of exhaust noise

Exhaust noise mainly comes from the intermittent high-pressure gas discharge and the noise generated when the exhaust valve is opened. Generally, it is achieved by using mufflers to reduce the noise.

Mufflers are classified as absorption type, reflection type, and combined type mufflers.

(2) Control of mechanical noise

The noise from the generator room is usually discharged through the ventilation louvers and the door of the generator room. Therefore, to ensure that the noise emission of the generator unit meets the requirements of low and environmental protection, it is necessary to ensure that the door of the generator room is a soundproof door or use two layers of doors to isolate the noise. In addition, the noise control of air intake and exhaust can be achieved by using noise reducers, soundproof louvers, and noise boxes.

Noise reduction engineering is a comprehensive professional project. When designing and constructing the noise reduction scheme for the unit, users should fully consider the low air intake and exhaust volume standards required for the normal operation of the unit and the emission back pressure should not exceed the reference value.
