The temperature in winter is relatively low, and there are often some minor problems when starting diesel generators. Some people often adopt incorrect methods, which can damage the diesel engine. Here are six methods that are not advisable for starting diesel engines in winter at low temperatures:
1. Heating the fuel tank with an open flame. Heating the fuel tank with an open flame will not only damage the paint on the engine body but also easily burn the plastic oil pipes, causing oil leakage and even an explosion due to the rapid expansion of gas inside the tank, resulting in damage to the engine body and casualties.
2. Drying heating the oil pan with an open flame. Drying heating the oil pan will not only affect the engine’s lifespan but also easily cause the oil to deteriorate, reducing the lubrication effect.
3. Not adding coolant water during startup. If coolant water is not added during startup and is added only after the diesel engine starts, the heated water tank will encounter cold water suddenly, causing cracks in the engine body and cylinder head.
4. Adding engine oil through the intake pipe. Adding engine oil through the intake pipe will cause carbon deposits on the piston and piston rings, reducing the service life.
5. Starting without an air filter and using fire to start. Removing the air filter and using fire to start will allow unclean air to enter the engine components such as the cylinder and valve, intensifying the wear of these components.
6. Starting without preheating and using other power sources to force-start. Starting the diesel engine without preheating and using other power sources to force-start will cause the crankshaft and bearing to be in a dry friction or semi-dry friction state, easily leading to crankshaft seizure of the bearing.
