Routine Maintenance of Diesel Generator Sets

General Maintenance Knowledge

1. Before Start-up

(1) Check the levels of lubricating oil, coolant and fuel oil first.

(2) Inspect pipelines and joints of the fuel supply, lubrication and cooling systems for oil or water leakage. Check electrical circuits for damaged insulation and electric leakage risks. Verify that grounding wires and other electrical connections are tight, and the unit is firmly fixed to the base.

6.1

(3) When the ambient temperature is below 0°C, add antifreeze to the radiator in the specified proportion (refer to the manufacturer’s documentation for details).

(4) For initial start-up or restart after long-term shutdown, use the hand priming pump to bleed air from the fuel system completely.

2. Start-up

(1) Switch on the fuse in the control box, then press the start button for 3 to 5 seconds. If start-up fails, wait 20 seconds before retrying.

(2) Stop repeated start attempts if failures persist. Troubleshoot issues such as low battery voltage or fuel line faults before restarting.

(3) Monitor oil pressure during start-up. Shut down the unit immediately if the pressure reading is absent or excessively low for inspection.

3. During Operation

(1) After start-up, check all parameters on the control module, including oil pressure, water temperature, voltage and frequency.

(2) The unit will normally run at 1500 r/min directly after start-up. For units requiring idling, keep the idle speed for 3 to 5 minutes only. Prolonged idling may damage generator components.

(3) Regularly check fuel, water and air lines for leakage.

(4) Inspect all connections and fasteners for looseness and abnormal severe vibration.

(5) Ensure all protection and monitoring devices work properly.

(6) Close the circuit breaker to supply power to loads after the unit reaches rated speed and runs stably under no-load condition.

(7) Confirm all readings on the control panel are within permissible ranges. Recheck for vibration, leakage and other malfunctions.

(8) Assign dedicated personnel to monitor the running unit. Overload operation is strictly prohibited.

4. Normal Shutdown

Disconnect the load first before shutdown. Let the unit run for another 3 to 5 minutes with no load before stopping.

5. Emergency Shutdown

(1) Shut down the unit immediately once any abnormal operating condition occurs.
