The exhaust system of Cummins diesel generator sets

Nowadays, diesel generator sets are widely used in various places, so they are often installed in basements or indoors. Therefore, the function of the exhaust system of a diesel generator set is to safely discharge the engine exhaust gas outdoors and keep the exhaust gas, smoke and noise away from buildings and people. The precautions when installing in the basement are as follows:

9.28

When installing a diesel generator set, to absorb thermal expansion, unit displacement and vibration, the engine exhaust port should be connected with a 24-inch (610mm) or larger telescopic stainless steel corrugated pipe. Similarly, the exhaust port of a small generator set directly fixed to the floor should also have a corrugated pipe of 18 inches or more.

(2) Corrugated pipes must not be used as elbows or to compensate for installation errors of pipelines.

(3) To reduce condensation corrosion, the exhaust pipe muffler should be installed as close to the engine as possible to facilitate rapid heating.

(4) The muffler and exhaust pipe should be supported by hangers (or brackets). It is strictly prohibited to use the engine exhaust pipe for support. Otherwise, it will damage the engine exhaust pipe and reduce the lifespan of the turbocharger.

(5) Black iron pipes are recommended for the exhaust pipe.

(6) Choose elbows with a larger radius as much as possible.

(7) Under the premise of meeting the back pressure limit of the engine exhaust pipe, it is recommended that the nominal diameter of the entire exhaust system pipe be kept as consistent as possible with the engine exhaust port. Pipes with diameters smaller than the exhaust port are prohibited from being used, as thick pipes are more prone to condensation corrosion and will also increase the volume of exhaust gas, resulting in power loss. The smaller the change in the diameter of the exhaust system pipe, the smaller the friction loss.

(8) It is recommended that all mufflers and exhaust pipes be insulated to prevent accidental contact with fire or false activation of automatic fire extinguishing equipment, thereby reducing condensation corrosion and heat radiation in the unit room.

(9) Unless the coolant temperature is very low, do not isolate the engine exhaust pipe and the turbocharger cover, otherwise it will cause high temperature and burn out the exhaust pipe and the turbocharger cover.

(10) The exhaust pipe and flammable materials should be at least 9 inches (299mm) apart. When it is necessary to pass through walls and ceilings, flame-retardant sleeves or heat insulation cotton should be added to the exhaust pipe.

At room temperature, for every 100°F increase in temperature, each inch of the exhaust pipe expands approximately 0.0076 inches (1.14mm/m×100). It is recommended that stainless steel corrugated pipes must be used to absorb the thermal expansion of long straight pipes. (The Haitian unit is randomly provided with corrugated pipes.)

(12) The horizontal exhaust pipe should have a slope, with the lower end far from the engine and extending outdoors or towards the condensate collector.

(13) The condensate drain and the plug should be installed at the vertical turning point of the exhaust pipe.

(14) The end of the exhaust system should be installed far away from buildings and air inlets to avoid blackening walls and Windows.

(15) It is recommended that the exhaust system be installed in the leeward part of the building, as high as possible, to facilitate the discharge of waste gas.

(16) Some standards stipulate that the end of the exhaust pipe should be at least 3 meters above the ground, 1 meter from the exterior wall or roof, 3 meters from the building entrance, and at least 3 meters above adjacent buildings.

(17) A rain cover should be installed on the vertical exhaust port.

(18) Diesel generator sets cannot share exhaust systems with other equipment (including other generator sets). Smoke and dust, corrosive condensate and high-temperature exhaust gas must not damage general equipment.

(19) The back pressure of the exhaust pipe must not exceed the value permitted in the engine manual. It is generally 20mbar to 50mbar. Excessively high back pressure will generate high-temperature exhaust gas and smoke dust, reducing the power and service life of the engine. Therefore, the back pressure of the engine exhaust gas should be estimated before determining the layout of the exhaust system. Before a diesel generator set is officially put into operation, the back pressure value at the exhaust port during full-load operation should be measured.
