Why do turbochargers tend to malfunction

Many users do not understand why turbochargers are prone to failure. Beidou Power explains: The rated working speed of a turbocharger is over 130,000 revolutions per minute, and it is located at the exhaust manifold outlet, with extremely high temperatures (above 800℃) and relatively high intake and exhaust pressures, that is, high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. Therefore, the requirements for lubrication, cooling, and sealing of the turbocharger are relatively high. To ensure the service life of the turbocharger, it is necessary to guarantee the lubrication and cooling of the floating bearings of the turbocharger in the design. Meanwhile, during use, the following requirements should be met:

6.25

After the engine starts, it should idle for 3 to 5 minutes. Do not immediately increase the load to ensure good lubrication of the turbocharger. The main reason is that the turbocharger is located at the top of the engine. If the turbocharger starts to run at high speed immediately after the engine starts, the oil pressure will not rise in time to supply oil to the turbocharger, resulting in oil shortage and damage to the turbocharger, or even burning out the entire turbocharger.

② The idling time should not be too long, generally not exceeding 10 minutes. Excessive idling time can easily cause oil leakage at the compressor end.

Before parking, do not immediately turn off the engine. Instead, let it idle for 3 to 5 minutes to lower the speed of the turbocharger and the temperature of the exhaust system, preventing faults such as reheating, oil coking, and bearing burnout. Frequent incorrect use can cause damage to the turbocharger.

For engines that have not been used for a long time (generally more than 7 days) or those with newly replaced turbochargers, engine oil should be added to the oil inlet of the turbocharger before use. Otherwise, poor lubrication may reduce the service life or damage the turbocharger.

⑤ Regularly check whether there is any loosening, air leakage or oil leakage at each connection part and whether the return oil pipe is unobstructed. If so, it should be eliminated in time.

⑥ Ensure the air filter is clean and replace it regularly as required.

⑦ Change the engine oil and oil filter regularly.

⑧ Regularly check the radial and axial clearance of the turbocharger shaft. The axial clearance should not exceed 0.15 millimeters, and the radial clearance is: the clearance between the impeller and the pressure shell should not be less than 0.10 millimeters. Otherwise, professional personnel should be invited for maintenance to avoid further losses.
