1. When there are abnormal phenomena during the operation of the diesel engine, one can use methods such as “observation, listening, touching, and smelling” to comprehensively determine which part or which system has malfunctioned.
- “Observation” involves checking the readings of various instruments, the color of exhaust smoke, and changes in water and oil;
- “Listening” uses a long metal rod or wooden handle as a “stethoscope” to touch the corresponding parts of the diesel engine’s outer surface and listen to the sounds emitted by moving parts and their changes;
- “Touching” involves using fingers to check the working condition of components such as the valve train and the vibration of the diesel engine;
- “Smelling” involves using the sense of smell to detect any abnormal odors emitted by the diesel engine.
2. When the diesel engine suddenly malfunctions or the cause of the fault has been determined, and the fault will affect the normal operation of the diesel engine, it is necessary to stop the engine for inspection promptly. For faults that cannot be immediately identified, the diesel engine can be operated at low speed and without load first, and then observed and analyzed to find the cause to avoid causing more serious accidents.
3. When it is determined to be a major fault or the diesel engine suddenly stops running on its own, it is necessary to promptly disassemble and maintain.
4. The causes and elimination methods of each occurrence of faults, especially major faults, should be recorded in the operation log for future maintenance reference.
