The diesel generator sets must be operated by personnel who are familiar with the structure of the sets and have mastered the safety operation procedures. New or recently overhauled diesel generator sets should undergo 60 hours of warm-up operation as per regulations and receive necessary maintenance.
Before new or long-unused generators are put into normal operation, they must undergo strict inspections, mainly checking the insulation of the windings, wiring conditions, etc. If there are any discrepancies, necessary handling should be carried out.
After the diesel engine starts, the speed should be gradually increased. After checking and confirming that everything is in good condition, low-speed to rated-speed no-load operation can be carried out. During no-load operation, pay special attention to checking the oil pressure, abnormal sounds, excitation current, three-phase voltage changes, etc. If any abnormal situation occurs – the machine should be immediately shut down for inspection. After ascertaining the situation, it can be restarted. If everything is normal, it can be put into normal operation. The operator should closely monitor the changes in the instruments on the control panel, whether they are within the permitted range, and make corresponding adjustments.
During operation, the operator should maintain a safe distance from live equipment and wear appropriate labor protection equipment. When performing switching operations, pay attention to the sequence. For example, when powering off, first disconnect the branch switches, then the main switch, and then switch the four-pole double-pole circuit breaker to the position. When powering on, the sequence is reversed. Normal shutdown should first remove part of the load, then disconnect the main switch, then turn off the diesel engine, and it is not allowed to not disconnect the main switch while the diesel engine is off and then power off automatically. After shutdown, conduct a routine inspection of the generator set and record the operation conditions (work diary).
In case of someone being electrocuted, the power switch should be quickly cut off, or the power should be quickly disconnected using an insulating tool. Then, rescue should be carried out, and a doctor should be invited to the scene for rescue. In case of an electrical equipment flood, immediately cut off the relevant power supply, report to the local power supply office, and then carry out fire fighting. For live equipment fire fighting, use dry powder fire extinguishers, carbon dioxide fire extinguishers, etc., and do not use water.
