A diesel generator is an independent power generation device, mainly providing emergency power during power outages. In fact, the generator is mostly in a standby mode and is rarely actually used. It is mainly tested and run in a trial state. There are relatively few complete detection and maintenance methods. However, this emergency backup power source is indispensable. How to ensure that the generator can supply power promptly during an emergency, operate safely and reliably, and stop immediately after the power outage? This article introduces some simple methods that can effectively achieve this goal.
First, the inspection of the electromagnetic valve. When the generator is running, people have summarized a set of inspection methods of “looking, listening, touching, and smelling”. The listening during startup is a very important step. Taking the original USA Cummins generator as an example, simply pressing the start button, after three seconds, the generator can start. During these three seconds, two “click” sounds can be heard. If the second sound is not heard, it is necessary to check whether the starting electromagnetic valve is working normally. If the electromagnetic coil burns out, the generator cannot start.
Second, the inspection of the battery pack. Since the backup power source is not frequently used, whether the generator can start normally depends on the maintenance and care of the battery. If there is a problem with the battery pack, the common situation is: there is voltage but no current. At this time, the sound of the electromagnetic valve in the starting motor being attracted can be heard, but it cannot drive the coupling. There are three reasons for the failure to stop the generator due to problems with the battery pack: 1. When conducting a trial run, stopping to charge the battery will cause insufficient battery power. 2. The mechanical oil pump is driven by a belt, and the rated rotational speed of the pump has a large amount of oil output. However, the battery pack does not supply enough power, causing the stop valve to fail to close properly through the four oil outlets, resulting in the inability to stop. 3. Domestic batteries usually have a lifespan of two years and are not regularly replaced.
Third, the inspection of diesel and lubricating oil. Because the generator is in a static state for a long time, various materials of the generator will undergo complex chemical and physical changes with the oil, coolant water, diesel, and air, thus causing the generator to be damaged. Therefore, attention should be paid to the oil issue. For fire safety reasons, the diesel fuel tank is usually placed in a sealed room. Due to the condensation of water vapor in the atmosphere caused by temperature changes, water droplets will adhere to the inner wall of the fuel tank and flow into the diesel, causing the diesel to have an excessive moisture content. Such diesel entering the high-pressure oil pump of the diesel engine will corrode the precision coupling components – the plunger, causing serious damage to the generator. The lubricating oil of the generator has a storage period. After long-term storage, the physical and chemical properties of the lubricating oil will change, resulting in a deterioration of the lubrication state during operation and easy damage to the generator components.
