Starting Operation of Diesel Generator Set

I. Automatic Mode

Ensure the voltage of the starting motor battery pack meets the cranking voltage requirement.

6.22

Maintain a normal cooling water level in the radiator and keep the circulating water valve fully open at all times.

Keep the crankcase oil level within ±2 cm of the scale marks on the oil dipstick.

Maintain fuel volume above half tank and keep the fuel supply valve open.

Set the “Run-Stop-Auto” selector switch on the generator control panel to the “Auto” position.

Switch the mode selector on the unit distribution panel to “Auto”.

Turn the radiator fan switch to the “Auto” position.

The unit will start upon receiving the mains power loss signal. After confirming mains power failure, disconnect the mains circuit breaker in the transfer cabinet, close the generator circuit breaker in the transfer cabinet, and start the air intake and exhaust fans of the generator room.

II. Manual Startup

Switch on the electric heater to preheat the unit when the indoor temperature is below 20°C.

Inspect the unit and its surrounding area for obstructions that may hinder operation; clear any debris immediately if found.

Check the crankcase oil level, fuel tank level and radiator water level. Top up fluids to the standard level if readings are below the specified range.

Verify that the fuel supply valve and cooling water stop valve are fully open.

Check that the voltage of the starting motor battery pack is within the normal range.

Press the test button on the distribution panel and confirm all alarm indicator lights illuminate.

Confirm all switches on the distribution panel are in the open position and all meters read zero.

Start the air intake and exhaust fans.

Press the engine start button to crank and run the unit. If the first startup attempt fails, press the corresponding reset button on the distribution panel. Do not attempt a second startup until all alarms are cleared and the unit returns to standby status.

A successful startup is confirmed when the unit runs with smooth sound, the cooling water pump running indicator lights up, and all meters show normal readings.

III. Manual Parallel Operation

Run the generator to be paralleled until its oil temperature, cooling water temperature and lubricating oil pressure reach standard values and stable operation is achieved.

Adjust the output voltage and frequency of the generator to match the voltage and frequency of the busbar.

Turn the synchroscope handle of the generator to be paralleled to the “Close” position.

Observe the indicator lights and pointer of the synchroscope.

Close the parallel circuit breaker once all synchroscope indicator lights are fully off or the pointer aligns with the zero mark.

After the unit is connected in parallel, turn the synchroscope handle back to the “Off” position.

Parallel connection is forbidden if the synchroscope pointer rotates too fast or counterclockwise after energizing the synchroscope; otherwise, breaker closing will fail.

Upon successful manual paralleling, contact the low-voltage power distribution room immediately to confirm whether the outgoing feeder breaker on the main distribution panel can be closed for power supply before carrying out subsequent operations.

IV. Safety Management During Operation

Inspect all indicating instruments at specified intervals and monitor fluctuations in lubricating oil pressure and cooling water temperature. The lubricating oil pressure shall not drop below 150 kPa, and the cooling water temperature shall not exceed 95°C.

Regularly check the crankcase oil level, fuel tank fuel level and radiator water level; replenish fluids when levels fall below the normal range.

Frequently monitor all meters and alarm lights on the distribution panel. Red lights indicate faults, while green lights signify normal operating status.

Verify the battery charger is charging properly.

Listen for abnormal noises from all components of the running unit.

Touch the unit housing, bearing housings, fuel pipes and cooling water pipes to check for abnormal surface temperatures.

Watch out for burnt odors or other unusual smells emitted by the generator and electrical equipment.

Address any abnormal conditions without delay; shut down the unit for troubleshooting in the event of serious faults.

If the unit shuts down due to a fault, eliminate the fault first, then press the unit reset handle before restarting the equipment.

Record all operating parameters no fewer than two times per work shift.
