The most important fire safety considerations for a diesel generator room

Diesel generator sets are generally placed in a machine room, which can be located in high-rise buildings, the first floor of a building, or in the basement. The setting of the machine room requires careful attention to ensure fire safety. In this article, we will examine the fire safety measures for a diesel generator set machine room.

1. The machine room should use fire-resistant walls with a limit of no less than 2.00h and fire-resistant floors with a limit of no less than 1.5h to separate it from other parts.

2. In high-rise buildings, a fuel storage room should be set up in the diesel generator room, and the total fuel storage capacity should not exceed 8.00h of demand, or a daily fuel tank capacity of no more than 1m3. The fuel storage room should be separated from the generator by a fire-resistant wall. When it is necessary to have a door on the fire-resistant wall, a Class A fire-resistant door that can close automatically should be installed.

3. In non-high-rise buildings, the fire-resistant level of the machine room and the daily fuel tank is at Level 1.

4. An automatic fire alarm system and an automatic fire extinguishing system should be installed.

5. The lighting circuit of the machine room and the control room should be connected to the fire protection distribution circuit.

6. The machine room must be equipped with fire-fighting equipment.

If you plan to build a diesel generator set room on the ground floor of a public building, there are several fire safety regulations to consider:

1. The outside of the machine room should have fire hydrants, fire hoses, and fire extinguishers.

2. The inside of the machine room should be equipped with oil extinguishers, dry powder extinguishers, and gas extinguishers.

3. A prominent “No Smoking” sign and a “No Smoking” symbol must be displayed.

4. A dry sand pool should be installed inside the machine room.

5. The machine room should be isolated from the fuel storage area.

In selecting a machine room location, the following points should be noted:

1. Try to locate the machine room near the transformer substation to facilitate wiring, shorten the cable length, and reduce energy loss.

2. When setting up in the basement, try to place it next to an external wall to facilitate ventilation and smoke exhaust.

3. Pay attention to the convenience of lifting, transporting, and inspecting the generator set. Generally, the parking garage entrance and exit can be used as a transportation channel, but if the channel cannot meet the requirements, a lifting hole should be reserved.

Fire prevention measures should be implemented as follows:

1. The machine room must be equipped with oil extinguishers, dry powder extinguishers, and gas extinguishers.

2. Fire hydrants, fire hoses, and fire extinguishers should be installed outside the machine room.

3. Prominent “No Smoking” signs and “No Smoking” symbols should be displayed around the machine room.

4. A dry sand pool should be set up inside the machine room.

5. The fuel storage area should be isolated.

6. The generator set should be at least 1 meter away from the building and other equipment, and maintain good ventilation.

7. The machine room should have emergency lighting and emergency signs. If it is in the basement, an independent ventilation system, fire alarm, and fire protection should also be installed.
