The root cause of the startup failure of the diesel generator set

As the core equipment for emergency power supply, diesel generator sets often fail to start smoothly and unexpectedly. In fact, most faults are not difficult to identify and can be quickly resolved by finding the root cause.

Fuel system: Frequent causes of poor starting

Fuel problems are the “hot spot” for starting difficulties. Insufficient fuel in the tank, blocked fuel lines, and long-term failure to replace the fuel filter can all lead to blocked fuel delivery; if the filter is replaced but the air is not completely drained, air mixed into the fuel lines will form an air blockage, causing the fuel injection pressure to drop sharply and preventing the fuel from atomizing normally. Additionally, incorrect diesel grade or excessive water content can also reduce combustion efficiency and make starting difficult. In such cases, first check the fuel quantity and filter, then use a manual pump to drain the air from the fuel lines, and replace with standard diesel.

Electrical system: Faults in the “heart” of starting power

Battery depletion is the most common starting obstacle, especially in low-temperature environments, where the battery capacity will significantly decrease, resulting in insufficient engine speed. At this time, use a multimeter to detect the voltage; if it is below 24V, charging or replacing the battery is necessary. At the same time, pay attention to the starting circuit; loose or oxidized connections will cause poor contact, and worn-out starting motor brushes or burned-out coils will cause the starting motor to “break down”, requiring timely tightening of the circuits or replacement of components.

Compression and environment: Invisible influences that are easily overlooked

Insufficient cylinder compression pressure will prevent the fuel from reaching the ignition temperature. Wear of piston rings and poor valve sealing will cause air leakage. At this time, when turning the crankshaft, an air leak sound can be heard from the air filter or exhaust pipe; the sealing components need to be disassembled and inspected. Low-temperature environments will cause the viscosity of engine oil to increase and poor fuel atomization. Installing a preheating device and using winter-specific engine oil can effectively improve the low-temperature starting performance.

Carry out regular checks of fuel, batteries, and air filters on a daily basis, and perform seasonal maintenance to keep the diesel generator set always ready for action, and avoid breakdowns at critical moments.
